Something Happened and It Felt Significant
Maybe it was a moment in nature. A coincidence that felt like more than coincidence. An unexpected encounter. A dream. A piece of music. A sudden feeling of connection, awe, love, peace, or knowing that seemed to come from nowhere.
Maybe something happened while you were grieving, facing a major change, or simply going about an ordinary day.
You may not even know how to describe it.
You just know that something about it felt important.
And now you can't quite stop thinking about it.
You don't have to decide whether it was God, intuition, coincidence, mystery, your imagination, the Universe—or anything else—before you're allowed to wonder about it.
Sometimes an experience doesn't need to be explained right away. Sometimes it simply needs our attention.
Where do you take an experience like that?
Sometimes these moments are difficult to talk about.
You may worry that someone will dismiss what happened, try to explain it away, think you're being irrational—or go in the opposite direction and confidently tell you exactly what it meant.
Neither may be what you're looking for.
Maybe you simply want a place where you can tell the whole story.
What happened? What did you notice? What did you feel? Why has this particular moment stayed with you? What does it stir in you now?
In spiritual direction, we can become curious about those questions together.
I won't tell you that what happened was a sign. I won't tell you that it wasn't.
We don't have to know.
We can simply begin with the fact that something happened, it mattered to you, and you would like to pay attention to it.
That's enough to begin.
It doesn't have to be extraordinary to matter.
Maybe you were walking outside and suddenly felt completely at peace.
Maybe you saw something—a bird, an animal, the way the light came through the trees—and for some reason it stopped you.
Maybe a song came on at exactly the moment you needed it.
Maybe you met someone and the encounter stayed with you.
Maybe there was a coincidence that was probably just a coincidence... but you're still thinking about it three weeks later.
Maybe you were sitting beside someone you loved when they were dying and something happened that you have never quite known how to talk about.
Or maybe nothing particularly unusual happened at all.
For one brief moment, you simply felt awe. Connection. Love. Presence. Wonder.
And some part of you thought:
What was that?
You don't need an answer to that question before you bring it here.
You only need to be curious about it
This is one of the things spiritual direction is for.
Spiritual direction isn't only for people who belong to a church, have a particular set of beliefs, or already know how to talk about their spiritual lives.
Sometimes it begins much more simply.
Something in your life has caught your attention.
My role isn't to interpret the experience for you or decide what you should believe about it. My role is to listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, notice with you, and help create enough space for you to explore what the experience might be stirring in you.
Maybe it leads somewhere.
Maybe it changes the way you understand yourself, your life, or the Divine.
Maybe it opens a question you didn't know you had.
Or maybe you never arrive at a tidy explanation at all.
We don't have to know where the conversation will lead before we begin it.
That's part of the mystery.
Maybe you just need somewhere to talk about it.
You don't need to know what you believe about the experience.
You don't need to decide whether it was spiritual, meaningful, coincidental, sacred—or something you simply don't have words for yet.
You can bring the experience exactly as it is.
We can sit with it, become curious about it, and see what unfolds.
If something in your life has been asking for your attention, I'd be honored to listen.
